I just got a SF job today and leave 5 january 2010. I was just wondering what tech school is like, and what kinds of things I would be doin when i get to my duty station. Thanks in advanced for answers.

Tech school isn't too bad. Stay out of trouble. If you're underage, don't drink. If you're of age, don't buy alcohol for/drink with those who aren't. And don't get married ;)

Once you get to your base, you'll most likely be spending a lot of time staring and an airplane and checking ID's. Or in a missile field staring at a big silo. There's a few other possibilities, but it all depends where you get sent (and don't worry about that "dream sheet" you're gonna fill out in basic. That's exactly what it is: a dream). Just realize that your first two years or so are gonna suck big time. Although if you keep your nose clean, there are a lot of opportunities in this career field. The hard part is getting to them.

Tech school is an okay deal. I've been out of it for a bit over a year now, and from talking to the new troops we're getting up here it hasn't changed much. 13 weeks. The first roughly 5 are law enforcement, 3 or so are CATM (Combat Arms Training and Maintenance- weapons training), 3 are field operations out at Camp Bullis, and the last 2 is a little more training back at Lackland, day and night operations at the mock airfield, gear turn-in and graduation prep. That should be pretty close to what you're looking at for tech school.
What you do when you get to your first duty station depends on what base you get. A good many troops wind up in the missile field. I can speak from that aspect at least. We spend 4 days out at an alert facility and respond to alarms at nuclear missile launch facilities. We have a training day when we get back, then 3 days off. No deployments or TDY's.
A lot of the guys I went through tech school with wound up in USAFE and PACAF (Europe and the Pacific). Sounds like they do a lot of entry control (gate guard type stuff) and flightline security and are working their ways up to law enforcement. Most of them have deployed in the past year, too (except for the ones who went to Korea. They got a yearlong tour over there and decent assignments afterwards, but they'll deploy from their new bases). Seems to be the same story for guys at stateside bases other than the missile bases.
The career field is awesome. There's a lot of different things that it's made up of. Best of luck to you.

I just found a great SP/SF history page and actually now have earned some respect for the 820 guys. I had no idea where they came from and I apologize for my ignorance. Anyway the whole website has a phenomenal history lesson on the 1041st SPS (Test) that started and drove OPERATION SAFESIDE. You may have read about this in your cdc's if not shame on you, thses guys are the reason you rate the wear of a beret. The pictures are great shots of life in Vietnam for SP's and even some good ones of 820 guys in Iraq. Anyway I felt I should share so here's the website:

So my recruiter told me if I don't book 9S then I'm going to basic with my SF contract. I'm suppose to ship May 18th to bootcamp for SF unless I get 9S. Is the dream sheet really a dream? I want to put down Wright Patterson, Scott AFB, Whiteman, Offut. What do you think my chances of getting it are?

Also, what kind of work am I expecting being a first term Airman.

As a cop? Expect long, shitty hours. Expect to be treated like shit...just about everywhere. Base gets a down day because of weather?
Not for you buddy.

Expect a crazy deployment rate.

Well ive been in tech school for 5 weeks now and only 3 of them have been training. 1st 2 weeks is catm, next 6 weeks of Law enforcement, 3 weeks at bullis, then 2 weeks night/day ops. Its not too bad just hard to stay awake in classes at times.

The dream sheat is deffinately just a dream, i got Malmstrom and it wasnt anywhere near my top, but i traded it for FE Warren, ill be there july 24th.

Huh. They've changed that quite a bit since I went through 3.5 years ago.

It's pretty much ALL we do... THANK YOU GOD for supplying Mildenhall with the 2 greatest bartenders ever (Brett and J.D.). Making me score with fatties since 2008 hahaha.

I know CATM may not seem like the training you invisioned but trust me it all works together. Now if you were saying you hadn't trained yet but are stuck in SAT status than I understand and apologize. I hate that so many have to sit around for so long before starting. It erodes the bearing you developed in BMT
