Palin Crossed Border For Canadian Health Care
Sam Stein – Mon Mar 8, 12:26 pm ET

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- who has gone to great lengths to hype the supposed dangers of a big government takeover of American health care -- admitted over the weekend that she used to get her treatment in Canada's single-payer system.

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," Palin said in her first Canadian appearance since stepping down as governor of Alaska. "And I think now, isn't that ironic?"

The irony, one guesses, is that Palin now views Canada's health care system as revolting: with its government-run administration and 'death-panel'-like rationing. Clearly, however, she and her family once found it more alluring than, at the very least, the coverage available in rural Alaska. Up to the age of six, Palin lived in a remote town near the closest Canadian city, Whitehorse.

Officials at several hospitals in that area declined to give out information on patient visits.

Kathy Griffin did a show here in Anchorage last Friday -- her best line, talking about Palin, "She's the gift that keeps on giving!"

Thanks

Yeah, because everyone knows Kathy Griffin is the epitome of relevance in America. Wait....what?

A lot of people must be intimidated by Sarah Palin. Otherwise, why would they keep talking about her? Who can name the 2 previous losing VP candidates? Last 3? No cheating with Google. During the election they acted like she was running for President and bemoaning her lack of experience, when in fact the man who ran and eventually won I submit was even more so. (Corpsman/Corpseman, anyone?) But you have to hand it to him, Obama is living the American dream, even if his dream will bankrupt us all.

2008 - Palin
2004 - Edwards
2000 - Leiberman
1996 - Kemp? I know it was Dole, but I am pretty sure his running mate was Jack Kemp...

Come on, give me something difficult. :)

EDIT: I just googled it, and it was indeed Jack Kemp - DAMN, I was only 11 years old then too. I can go back at least another one (without google assistance) - 1992 - Dan Quail.

State-Run Media Red-Faced Over Palin’s Canadian Doctor Visits

The state-run media was sooooo desperate to find something to attack Sarah Palin on yesterday that they forgot to factcheck their latest smear.

On Monday, the leftist media was thrilled to report that Sarah Palin used the Canadian health care system when she was a child. The Huffington Post, the Washington Post and Matthew Yglesias were happy to report this line this line from her speech this past weekend in Calgary:

“We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada. And I think now, isn’t that ironic? ”

This, they suggested, proved she endorsed the Canadian and US democrat’s socialist health care system.

But, unfortunately they didn’t have all the facts. Ben Smith later in the day posted the corrections:

CORRECTION: Whitehorse is in Yukon, not Saskatchewan, and Palin, as a young child, lived closer to itthan earlier reported.

UPDATE: Here’s some more context: “My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse. Believe it or not – this was in the ’60s – we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isn’t that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada.”

ALSO: Socialized medicine apparently only kicked in in Yukon in 1972, post-Palin.

Another attack on Palin falls flat. Bummer.

-end-

-Ronin sez-

There's a shocker. Sarah's parents took their kids to the nearest available medical care, even though they had to cross a border to do it. And since the socialized medical plan only kicked in in 1972, they must have paid for their treatments.

What Sarah was referring to in her remarks is the ironic fact that Americans of that time would travel to Canada for treatment, rather than the other way around. Like Newfoundland Preimier Danny Williams, who boogied out of Canada to a U.S. hospital for heart surgery.

If Obamacare passes, I imagine there are going to be numerous expensive clinics popping up in the Caribbean and South America where those who have the cash (most specifically including the rich liberals) will zip off to have their procedures done while the rest of America enjoys the waiting lists and incompetence that British and Canadian medical care have made so very famous.

Well OK then. She keeps getting herself into the news with her resignation, speeches, and book, all of which seem to be clearly setting her up for a White House run. So, she's in the news, thus people talk about her. Besides, she wasn't the usual VP nominee. McCain swung for the fences with that pick, hoping she would generate a ton of buzz. Most VP candidates just round out the ticket, not upstage the main candidate.

And I don't think comedians spent eight years making fun of Bush because they were intimidated by him.

Interesting, Ronin! I hadn't yet had time to research it, but I *did* take the "ironic" part just as you said.

"State Run Media" and "Main Stream Media" are two terms that many conservatives and others have adopted to emphasize their opinion that most media outlets today (with the exception of Fox and Talk Radio) are overwhelmingly liberal and in support of the Obama administration, and thus not only present an editorial policy that rigidly toes the Obama talking points, but willingly and consciously slants the news they report to denigrate, delegitimatize and mock persons with whom they disagree, or completely ignore news that does not fit their accepted narrative.

This story can be considered a case in point.

Good find on the counter article Ronin. Like you, I didn't take her statement on the irony to mean an approval either.

If only the news is reporting on these sorts of things (her book, her speeches, her resignation, etc) instead of her knocked up 16 year old or what the Palin family did when Sarah was 8, then you may have a point. But, since the media ignores the real stories and focuses on tearing her down as much as possible, your point is largely invalid.

As relevant as Dennis Miller or any other comedian using current events and politics as fodder for material. As she also stated a few times, "I can't make this shit up!"

Thanks
